I really appreciate you taking the time to get to know more about me and my work. My wife, Tina, and I live in the Colorado River valley near Columbus, Texas. We have two terrific children - married and soon-to-be. We are fortunate to see them often. I spend a lot of time birding, backpacking, and fishing from my homemade pirogue. I always thought it would be cool to build my own boat, so I sold both my kayaks and, - being boatless - got after it. A few weeks later, I was back in the marsh chasing trout and reds. It was a great experience, and I recommend it if you have any such proclivities. I also grow as much of my own vegetables in as sustainable way as I can and recently learned to make my own beer.
My approach to life is experiential. I like to learn things, and I like to do things. In my 40's I started back to college and earned a BS in cultural anthropology from the University of Houston. It served me well at Shell Oil where I helped integrate help desk and change management systems across Shell's European and Australian IT businesses. Near the end of my career, I went to school at U of H once again and got an MS in studies of the future. The world seemed to be changing at a rapid pace, and I thought this course of study might help me understand how and why. It offered many insights the most important of which is that futurists don't predict the future - charlatans do that. Futurists examine what is going on in the world and help others (individuals, businesses, churches, states...) build plans to both be ready for a range of possibilities and to influence how things might unfold. I am most interested in the latter part and fully believe that we create our own futures. If you are interested in how one might do that, look back at this site soon for a link to The Creative Futures Center. Through the Center, I offer primarily personal coaching, but also a range of facilitation and teaming resources.
While in the futures studies program I co-authored an essay titled Mars Colony. This was included by futurist Arthur B. Shostak in a high school textbook Moving Along: Far Ahead (Tackling Tomorrow Today). I have also written the novel and short story(s) that brought you to this page. I have much more writing to do and am currently exploring writing for internet content sites.
Thanks for your interest,
John
